The Sterling Tungsten carbide knife Sharpener is designed to be used flat on the edge of a table, bench, stump or a rock by drawing the knife blade downward through center of sharpener's carbide bits at a 45 degree angle. A very dull knife should be pulled through with quite a bit of pressure. As it begins to get sharp, reduce pressure and stroke very lightly until sharpened to your requirement. If knife blade gets marks on the edge, use your stone to true it up.
A serrated knife has to be pulled through very slowly (the smaller the serrations, the slower you go). Never use heavy pressure on serrated knifes.

ELECTRIC KNIVES:
Separate the blades and sharpen one at a time. Lay the side of the blade that rubs together flat against the carbide on one side and pull through slowly. This sharpens the blade the same the factory did.

MACHETE'S/SICKLE/SYTHS:

Clamp blade in a vise and carefully drag the sharpener along the blade through center of sharpener's carbide bits at a 45 degree angle.
BROADHEADS:
Sharpen the same way as knives - leave the broadheads on the shaft to sharpen.
